ازداد الاتجار غير المشروع بالآثار القادمة من المناطق التي تشهد حروباً في الشرق الأوسط، ازدياداً رتيباً خلال العقدين الماضيين. وعلى الرغم من وجود توافق آراء دولي على إدانة هذه التجارة غير المشروعة، لا يزال من الصعوبة بمكان مكافحتها عملياً. 

ويقول عَمرو العظم، وهو عالم آثار وأستاذ تاريخ وأنثروبولوجيا الشرق الأوسط في جامعة شوني الحكومية في أوهايو بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، إنّ الطريقة الوحيدة لوقف الاتجار غير المشروع، هي تشديد العقوبات على المشترين.

"أنا أرى الاتجار غير المشروع كجسر له طرفان، العرض والطلب؛ فمن ناحية العرض، يقف الذين ينهبون الآثار في الميدان ويزودون الشبكة بها، ومن ناحية الطلب، يقف المشترون، سواءً كانوا مشروعين أم لا. فعلينا تضييق الخناق على الطرفين بغية معالجة هذه المشكلة بجدية، فإذا ما تعاملت السلطات مع جانب واحد، ستفشل في مساعيها، وعلى الحكومات وضع استراتيجيات عديدة من أجل التصدي لمختلف أنواع النهب".

 The illicit trade in antiquities from war-stricken regions in the Middle East has increased monotonously over the past two decades. Although there is an international consensus to condemn this illegal trade, it is still difficult to combat it in practice.

 Amr Al-Azm, an archaeologist and professor of Middle Eastern history and anthropology at Shawnee State University in Ohio, USA, says that the only way to stop the illegal trade is to tighten sanctions on buyers.

 “I see illegal trade as a bridge that has two sides, supply and demand. On the supply side, those who plunder the antiquities stand in the field and supply them to the network, and on the demand side, the buyers stand, whether they are legitimate or not. We must tighten the screws on both parties in order to seriously address this problem. Therefore, if the authorities deal with one side, they will fail in their endeavors, and the governments must devise many strategies in order to address the various kinds of looting. "
